William Bright’s fifteen year old son Corin was murdered nearly twenty years ago. The killer was never caught, and the aftermath of the crime blew William’s life apart. His marriage collapsed, he fell into addiction and found himself living on borrowed money and borrowed time.
When a new body is found near Corin’s murder site, the police fear that the killer has struck again. Bright is in disbelief. How is this possible? No one knows this but when Corin’s case fell apart through lack of evidence and the prime suspect was released, Bright killed the man himself and buried him in the Essex marshes.
Now, Bright must walk a precarious tight rope of collaborating with the police whilst keeping them off his own, guilty scent.
In doing so, he forms an unlikely alliance with Fran Caraway, a detective who, as a junior cop, was a first responder to the scene of Corin’s murder.
But his new investigation takes him down a rabbit hole darker than any before. William enters the hellscape of murderabilia - a deep web marketplace where items connected to homicides are bought and sold. It’s an unknowable place where obsessives gather. It’s a place where a killer may very well be lurking.
If Bright ever wants to find peace, he will have to confront the past and face the possibility that he is no better than the evil he is trying to vanquish.
